Moving Guide

Your complete moving guide

Change your mailing address

Whether your move is permanent or temporary, you should change your address and move date so that mail going to your old address will be forwarded. You should also change your address with the RMV. All of this can be done from the comfort of your couch.

Transfer your utilities: gas & electric

Don't be stuck without gas after your move. Start, stop or transfer service on your utilities before your actual move date. NSTAR and National Grid provide gas and electric services for most of Massachusetts. Both companies share the market for both types of utilities, so it varies from town to town.

Water and sewer service

When purchasing a new home, it's important to think about your water and sewer needs. Water prices can be quite high, so check out how to conserve. It's also a good idea to check reports on everything from drinking water test results to your town's supply status.

Cable, Internet and satellite services

Almost as important as your utilities, your cable or satellite can help you to feel at home while you unpack and get settled. With these services, you can get services such as On Demand, a digital video recorder, and even parental controls as addons. There are different providers, depending on which town you buy in.

Whether you're new to the area, or you have moved, you'll need to re-register in your new area. You can register at the DMV, with the city or town clerk, or by mail.

Packing like a pro

Find out how to work with movers, which boxes to pick and how to organize the moving process. You can even print box labels and buy the materials you need.

Find a truck or hire movers

Moving all your belongings by the car-load isn't always the most efficient. Take some time to find and reserve a truck and move everything in one load. Renting a truck around September 1 can be tricky, so plan ahead.

Utilizing a storage facility isn't always as easy as it seems. It's important to sort out the proper packing techniques and unit size ahead of time in order to avoid headaches. Easy does it! “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” and your moving process can takes weeks or months before you are all moved in. This is normal. Don’t have unrealistic expectations of yourself. Take time to simultaneously enjoy your new home and community while you move in.
